Where Does the Word Plumber Come From?
Finding the origin to words can often shed a new light on them. You may be wondering where does the word plumber come from exactly? Today of course it refers to those professionals that come to our homes and work on our water pipes. The word is believed to date back to the 14th century, during Roman times. Homes in Rome had roofs that were made from plumbum, in Latin, or what we call in English today, lead. Those working on these lead roofs were often referred to as plumbarius, which was shortened to plumber.
As Rome advanced, their baths eventually began using lead pipes, and of course, someone needed to install them and fix them. Many used to working with the metal for roofing, transitioned into building these bath systems. After the fall of Rome, water pipes were not as common, and ‘plumber’ went on to be used for anyone working with lead, which came to be used in coffins, statues, cooking items and more.
Today of course, we love our fresh running water! Many pipes used were made from lead, and thus the rise of the word plumber for those working with water pipes. Where does the word plumber come from?
