What Causes Plumbing Leaks?

Posted on: January 28th, 2012

During our trading history we have gathered a lot of information on just what causes plumbing leaks. There are literally dozens of reasons for pipes to start leaking. However, there are a handful of reasons which are far more common than others; we take a look at a few of these below.

  • Accidental damage – This is pretty straightforward and speaks for itself. Any damage caused to a pipe or fitting by hitting, striking or otherwise causing it stress. Most usually young children are the root cause, although gardening accidents are also common with external pipes. Oddly enough, the main form of accidental damage is caused by people attempting to either repair their own pipes, or doing some other kind of D.I.Y. The moral of this story is leave plumbing leaks to the experts!
  • Fatigue – All pipes suffer from fatigue. Fatigue is much more pronounced in heating systems where pipes heat up and cool down. However, every pipe suffers from some level of stress. Joints between pipes are usually the main problem with fatigue; they are the proverbial weak link. It is worth checking joins between pipes regularly to see if they are starting to demonstrate the negative effects of fatigue.
  • Freezing  – Probably the most common cause of plumbing leaks in external above ground pipes. Pipes can freeze easily in the winter. When a pipe freezes the water turns to ice, the volume of ice is greater than water, so the pipe is forced to expand, this can ultimately lead to a rupture, split or burst. Always lag above ground external pipes when possible.

So there you have it, the top three causes of damage to pipes which can result in plumbing leaks. If you spring a leak, then call ADI today, we can arrange for an engineer to visit.
