Tips For Saving On Your Water Rates

Posted on: December 20th, 2011

You’ve probably never thought of this but the reality is that you’re probably using far more water than you ever realized. How much water do you think you use per day or per month? A couple of gallons? Maybe a bit more. Sit down because there’s a reality check coming. The average first world family uses around 10,000 gallons of water every single month. Yes that’s right every single month and now you need to multiply that by the population of the UK to get a more realistic idea of how much water we consume every single year. Even something as simple as flushing a toilet uses between 7 and 10 gallons of water for every flush. Are you shocked yet?

So we’d like to share some water conservation tips with you to help save you money on your water rates.

1. Anything that’s dripping or leaking needs to be replaced. It might only seem like a trickle but it can add up to thousands of gallons of wasted water every year.

2. Don’t turn on your washing machine or dishwasher unless you have a full load – you’re wasting both water and electricity otherwise.

3. Your toilet is one of the biggest water hogs in your home besides the bath so make sure that there are absolutely no leaks in it and that it’s not continually pouring water into the toilet bowl even when the toilet itself is not in use.

4. Don’t turn on the shower until you’re ready to actually take a shower. Most people have their shower on for 5 – 10 minutes before they actually use it. Again you’re wasting both water and electricity here.

6. Recycle water used for boiling vegetables – if nothing else use it to water your plants outside. Otherwise you’ll just wind up pouring it down the sink.

7. Showers use far, far less water than a bath which uses about 20 gallons of water for each bath you take. A shower uses a fraction of that so use your shower more often than your bath.
