Saving Money with a Gas Leak Detector

Posted on: January 10th, 2012

When you smell a gas leak in your home, it’s never good news. Whether it’s a faulty connection in the kitchen, or a broken line in the cellar, a gas leak spells trouble.

Even if you consider yourself the master of the DIY universe, you should not try to repair a gas leak by yourself. People are injured every year trying to do so, and the little bit of money you might save by no means justifies the risk to yourself, your home, and your family.

Remember that gas is flammable and combustible. There is a reason that gas safe certifications exist. When you’re dealing with a leaking gas line, you should deal exclusively with legally certified gas safe professionals, like the team at ADI Gas Detection.

However, although we don’t recommend trying to repair gas leaks on your own, you can save a considerable amount of money by detecting the location of the gas leak before the plumber arrives.

You see, it’s a little known fact about plumbing that a good plumber can repair any leaking pipe reasonably quickly. What can often take much longer, and drive up the hourly rates, is the leak detection process. Even with the most advanced technology, some leaks are still just tough to find.

By detecting the leak on your own, you can cut the time of the plumbers visit, and save yourself some money. In certain cases, since you know your own home and the locations of everything therein, you may actually be able to locate the leak more quickly than the plumber would be able to.

While you can try to detect the leak by simply the following the smell, a more reliable way is to use a gas leak detector. These can be found a quality hardware stores for a reasonable cost, and will typically warn you with lights and/or sounds when you’re in the presence of combustible gasses.

Even if you can’t pinpoint the exact location of the leak, by pointing the plumber in the general direction, you can save some time, and ultimately shave a few dollars off of your plumbing bill.
