If a Boiler Leaks Water, Does it Need Replaced?
If you are a home owner and your boiler leaks water, you may wonder if it is serious enough to need a replacement. A leak in a boiler can go on for days, weeks, months and even years without you even knowing. Most people don’t notice that their boiler leaks water until they actually see it on the floor in a puddle, which is where panic sets in. You may have nothing to worry about or a lot to worry about depending on the type of leak you are dealing with.
You can probably get away with a boiler repair instead of a replacement in many cases. For instance, if the leak is coming directly from one of the pipes leading to or from the boiler, you will simply need to replace the pipe…the boiler is probably fine. Leaks from pipes can be pretty common and if you have some knowledge of plumbing, you can possibly even do this yourself. If you want to make sure it is done correctly, bring a plumber in for the repairs.
If the water is actually leaking from the tank, you may have a bigger problem at hand and you will need some serious help from a professional plumber. Depending on the situation, you may be able to weld the tank or otherwise block up a crack or hole from which water is leaking, but in most cases, it will be more cost effective to buy a new tank. This will also be a process that is inconvenient as you will need to train the tank, remove it, get it to a welder, wait a few days for repair then bring it back. A plumber should be called in to evaluate any serious leaks. They have the expertise and may be able to save your boiler.
