How to Find Water Leak in Wall

Posted on: January 10th, 2012

You may notice that you have a leak from the wall in your home and of course, you will want to find it as quickly as possible. When you have to find water leak in wall there are several ways that you can go about it. Before doing something drastic like cutting a hole in your wall, you may find that it is not coming from the wall at all, but from somewhere else. Even simple condensation, that can appear anywhere, can give the appearance of a leak.

If you have bathroom or sink fixtures around, your best bet is to look there for a leak. The water may actually be coming from the toilet or sink and not the pipes inside the wall at all. It would be a shame to take out the wall if you don’t have to. Pay specific attention to all of the valves and connections on the appliances as water can be coming out of there as well. If you can’t find any leaks in this way, try the next step.

Check that all the supply lines and waste lines are intact. One way to do this is to not use the water supply in the upper floor of your home for at least a day. If the leak stops, it is probably the supply or waste line and you will need to get them repaired or repair them yourself if you have the knowhow. For people who still cannot find water leak in wall, you will likely need to take the wall out and inspect the pipes. It is important to know, however, that just because water is showing up in one place, doesn’t mean the source is there. At this point you will likely want to call a plumber in, who will be able to professionally find the leak while doing as little damage as possible.
