How on Earth to Find an Underground Water Leak
If you have a pond or miniature lake in you back garden that you did not install intentionally or have noticed that your water bill seems massively higher the last few months, you might have a water leak somewhere. If you haven’t seen any obvious signs of a water leak among your indoor appliances or outdoor irrigation systems, the leak may well be hidden below the surface. No need to panic, however. Here is a quick do-it-yourself guide on how to find an underground water leak.
First you should establish whether or not there is a water leak on your property. Some obvious signs of leaks are unexplained puddles, water damage, consistent dripping, and unexplained or sudden increases in your water bill. In order to determine whether your water leak is occurring indoors or underground, you can follow these simple steps:
- Find your water meter.
- Find your main water valve (this could be inside or outside).
- Shut off all appliances, fixtures, and outlets (indoors and outdoors) which use water.
- While all appliances, etc. are shut off, note the position of the dial on your water meter. After 10 to 30 minutes, note the dial’s position once more. If it has moved, you either have an indoor or outdoor leak.
- Shut off the main water valve. Repeat step 4, noting the water meter’s dial position before and after about 30 minutes.
- If the dial on your water meter ceases moving with your main valve shut off, your leak is most likely inside the building.
- If the meter continues to move even after you have shut off your main water valve, your water leak is most likely occurring underground.
After you have identified that you have an underground water leak, it is best to contact a professional to find the underwater leak’s exact source and location.
