Finding the Leak in a Leaking Hot Water System

Posted on: January 13th, 2012

Though you may not physically see it, you may have a leaking hot water system in your home. Usually there are signs of a leak such as low pressure or a high water bill. If this is the case, you are simply wasting money, water and possibly damaging the structures of your home. It is important if you suspect a leak that you take care of the problem as soon as possible by finding and fixing the problem.

The very first thing you should do is to head to the toilet. This is the most common place for a leak and it is very easy to detect. Take a few drops of food colouring and place it in the tank. Wait approximately 15 minutes then come back and check the bowl. If the food colouring is in the bowl, you have a leak in the toilet and this is probably the cause of your leaking hot water system. Contacting a professional plumbing company like ADI will fix the situation quickly.

Next you should do a run through of the house to visually look at all of the pipes and appliances that use water. Look for drips or spots of water around these areas. You should also use your nose and try to detect the scent of mould or mildew.

If there is no leak in the toilet or visually in the pipes, check the water metre that is running to your home. You should see a dial that is moving. Shut off the water to the house and check the meter again. If the dial is still moving, you have a leak between the metre and the house. Walking the path back, feel for soft ground or standing water.

If you cannot locate any leak, you should certainly get in touch with ADI. They have specialised equipment that can find the leak and get your water system back to working order in no time at all.
