Finding A Water Leak Between The Meter And Your House

Posted on: January 9th, 2012

If you’re living in a home or property where the water is metered then the very last thing you want to have to deal with is a water leak or burst pipe. This is for the simple reason that every single drop of water that gets soaked from the pipe back down into mother Earth is costing you money. It might only be a tiny trickle of water going to waste but over any given year that trickle is going 24/7 and wasting thousands upon thousands of gallons of water that you have to pay for but never get to use.

The first step in figuring out whether or not you have a water leak between the water meter and your house is to remove your house from the equation. All this means is that you need to make sure your home isn’t consuming or using any water at all while you track down the leak. To do this make sure nobody is using showers, taps, sinks or anything else in your home that might consume water. This is important because otherwise you’re not going to be able to get an accurate reading if the shower is running and somebody is using a hose to water the flowers in your garden.

Next check on the water meter itself – there’s usually an analogue display (like a clock face) that shows how many gallons of water your home is consuming. Now the dial itself might not move straight away so you’ll need to watch it carefully for a few minutes. If the dial moves to show usage when you know nobody is using water in your house then you know you have a water leak on your property and that’s when it’s time to call in the team at ADI Plumbing and have us check out and repair this problem for you.
