Dealing With Hot Water Heater Leaks

Posted on: January 12th, 2012

Hot water heater leaks can be a real problem. They can proceed quietly, dripping steadily and even unnoticed—unless you happen to open the hot water heater closet and see the accumulated water. Of course, more serious leaks can flood the closet and even expand into surrounding rooms, at which point they are noticed but damage may already be done. Hot water heater leaks are best prevented. But how should you do this? One good way is to get a homeowner’s insurance policy that covers repairs to appliances. Such a policy will likely mandate regular checkups, but at least you’ll be reminded to get them done by a quality firm such as ADI. Otherwise, you can use your scheduling system to give you annual reminders. The key thing is to get that regular maintenance done; in this case, a shilling’s worth of prevention avoids many, many pounds of cure.

If you discover a leak and can’t get a qualified service technician to take care of it right away, there are some stopgap measures you can take. First, remove all pooled water. A wet-dry vacuum is an excellent choice, and they are usually available for rental locally. Alternately, if the problem is acute, simply grab all of your excess towels and use them to sop up the water. (Paper towels can also be used, but you’ll go through them faster and of course they can’t be reused.) In an urgent situation, a mop or even a sponge can also be used to sop up water. You can squeeze the mop or sponge into a bucket and then empty the bucket, repeatedly as necessary.

If the leak isn’t too bad, you can spread extra towels or paper where the water is pooling and keep replacing them until the qualified service technician arrives.
