A Water Heater That’s Leaking From The Top

Posted on: January 9th, 2012

The original plumbers used lead to make the water and waste pipes they worked with. In fact that’s where plumbing gets its name – from the Latin word plumbum which means lead. Of course lead is no longer used in plumbing because it’s simply not tough enough but even the new and tougher metals used in plumbing can become weakened over time. And when they do weaken or corrode then you’re looking at a problem like a leak in your water heater.

So if you’ve discovered that your water heater has a leak at the top of the unit then you’re most likely looking at a problem with one of the connectors for the water supply to the heater. These connectors are obviously used quite a lot and are more likely to suffer from corrosion than other parts of the heater. All water heaters come with a specific warranty so if your heater is within the warranty period then simply have the supplier replace it with a new one – and it won’t cost you anything for this privilege either. On the other hand if your heater is outside the warranty or guarantee period then you’ll need to look at either repairing or replacing the entire unit.

Because of the nature of this type of leak repairs can be tricky at the best of times and most plumbing companies prefer to replace the entire unit rather than replace it simply because of the potential risks of a repaired heater failing again in the future. Repaired metal isn’t always stronger even if the repair is carried out by a plumbing perfectionist – there can still be stress fractures and weaknesses that simply aren’t visible to the naked eye.
